Sulcus vocalis, defined as a type of groove along the free edge of the vocal fold, disrupts the normal, pliable vocal fold cover, causing alterations in the intrinsic mucosal wave. The primary symptom is breathy, effortful dysphonia. Diagnosis may be challenging, and this classically has led to difficulties with identification and management.Sulcus vocalis is more localized, and often surrounded by signs of scarring or inflammation, such as rediness and swelling. Like sulcus vergeture, the area of the sulcus does not vibrate normally during voicing, due to the absence of the vibratory layer of the vocal fold.Sulcus vocalis is a voice disorder that causes perpetual hoarseness, vocal weakness and voice fatigue. The condition results from a thinning or loss of a layer of tissue along the vocal cord (vocal fold) called the superficial lamina propria.
Introduction Sulcus vocalis is defined as a longitudinal depression on the vocal cord, parallel to its free border. Its most marked characteristic is breathlessness, caused by incomplete glottal.A clinically useful classification for sulcus vocalis is as follows: type 1 is a physiologic variant accentuat-ed by atrophy but with intact lamina propria; types 2 (sulcus vergeture) and 3 (sulcus vocalis) are char-acterized by severe dysphonia, loss of vibratory activity, and destruction of the functional superficial lamina propria.(1).
Also, apparent acquired onset of sulcus vocalis is also possible, especially following laser surgery, due to aging changes, and vocal fold paralysis. Voice quality that results from a vocal fold sulcus may be mild to severely dysphonic depending on the stiffness of the fold and the size of the glottal gap caused by the sulcus.
